How Many Types of Tooth Bridges Are Available?

Two major types of bridges are available: traditional and cantilever. With a traditional bridge, a row of pontic teeth is supported by a set of crowns, which are placed over adjacent teeth or dental implants. If you do not have healthy teeth on one side of the affected area, the dentist may recommend a cantilever tooth bridge. With this type of bridge, a pontic is added outside the abutment teeth.

What Happens When You Receive Crowns for Teeth?

Receiving a new crown usually involves several steps. During an initial visit, the dentist will assess your smile and re-shape the affected tooth. This allows the tooth to better accommodate the new crown. Impressions are also taken of the tooth, which are sent to the lab that will create the crown. A temporary crown is used to protect the tooth while the new crown is fabricated. This process takes about two weeks. At a second visit, the dentist will place and adjust the final crown.

What Are the Steps for Getting a Tooth Bridge?

When a bridge is necessary, the first step is preparing the supporting (abutment) teeth. The dentist will re-shape the teeth so that they can support dental crowns. Then, impressions and measurements are taken of the teeth to ensure the new appliance fits properly. You’ll receive a temporary bridge to wear while the permanent prosthetic is created. Once the final bridge arrives from the lab, you’ll return to our practice for a fitting and adjustment.
