When your teeth are yellowish, dingy, or discolored, the first impression you make can be the wrong one.
If you’re embarrassed by the color of your teeth, you’re not alone. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry notes that dingy teeth are the highest-ranked flaw that people would like to fix in their smiles. Our office in Ludlow has two ways to bring the sparkle back to your smile by removing years of stains and discoloration. You can relax in our office as we whiten your teeth in roughly a half-hour. Or, if you prefer something that fits conveniently into your home schedule, we provide a take-home product that can professionally bleach your teeth within for minutes each day over less than two weeks.
Whichever your preference, we also recommend a professional cleaning beforehand to give your new smile a beautiful foundation without any trapped food particles or bacteria that might interfere with your whitening treatment.
Why Whiten Your Teeth?
Even the most radiant of smiles can become not-so-bright for a variety of reasons. Tooth decay and poor oral hygiene, of course, can change your tooth color over time, but even if you’ve been diligent about brushing and flossing daily, other factors can impact the color of your teeth.
Tooth enamel, or the outer layer of our teeth, is porous, making it vulnerable to foods and beverages with high color pigments. Even regular brushing won’t completely remove the remnants of that daily coffee, tea, cola, or red wine.
As we age, our enamel naturally grows thinner, showing more of the softer substance behind the enamel: the inner dentin. If you injure a tooth, your body’s natural reaction is to produce more dentin, which also can become more noticeable.
Smoking or using tobacco products also will stain teeth because of the tar and nicotine these products contain.
Also, certain medical treatments and medications are known to darken teeth. These include some antibiotics, antipsychotics, antihistamines, high blood pressure medicine, chemotherapy, and radiation focused around the head and neck.
That said, if you’ve been advised that you’ll need restorative dental work such as a crown, bridge, veneer, or dentures, you might want to whiten your teeth before undergoing these procedures. Tooth whitening treatments don’t work on these items because they’re stain-resistant, so these cosmetic fixtures will blend in better if they’re color-matched to your whiter teeth.
GLO® Science Professional: Dramatic Results with No Sensitivity
Our office in Ludlow is proud to use the revolutionary GLO Science Professional, a whitening system known for delivering fast results with no tooth sensitivity. After just one 32-minute session, GLO Science Professional can turn teeth an average of five shades whiter.
Based on your current tooth sensitivity, discoloration, and the desired result, we’ll help you choose between the strengths of whitening gel with 24 percent or 30 percent hydrogen peroxide. Once we apply the gel to your teeth, GLO Science Professional works its magic with an innovative closed mouthpiece that focuses gentle heat and light on your teeth. The patented design of the mouthpiece ensures faster results that last longer than some other treatments with no discomfort afterward.
GLO®: Whiten Teeth at Home or On the Go
Our office in Ludlow also offers the GLO teeth whitening system, which uses a closed mouthpiece similar to the in-office method along with gentle heat and light.
Before using GLO, you’ll brush and floss your teeth, then treat your lips with the provided lip balm. Squeeze a pea-size amount of 9 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening gel from one of the premixed vials onto its brushed tip, and brush onto your lower and upper teeth. Then bite down on the mouthpiece, which attaches to a remote on a lanyard. The remote focuses light and gentle heat on the whitening gel.
After eight minutes, rinse and reapply the gel for a total of four eight-minute treatments. Because the remote can be worn on a lanyard, you’re free to work on your computer, do chores, or even relax with a good book or your favorite TV show while using GLO.
After five days, you should notice a significant difference in your teeth, an average of five shades brighter. The system is safe to use for up to ten consecutive days.
