An Overview of Root Canals

During a root canal treatment, the pulp and nerves of the tooth are removed and the canal, or inside of the tooth, is cleaned and sealed off. This procedure is typically performed to treat an infection or inflammation and may provide a permanent solution to tooth pain.

Do You Need Root Canal Therapy?

If you have an infected tooth and do not receive a root canal or other treatment, the affected tooth will likely need to be extracted. Here are some signs you may need a root canal:

  • Moderate to severe tooth pain that doesn’t go away
  • Sensitivity to temperatures
  • Darkening or discoloration of the affected tooth
  • Tenderness and swelling of the gums

What Qualifies Dentists to Perform Root Canals?

A specialist called an endodontist and a general dentist both have the education and training required to perform root canals. If you’re looking for a qualified root canal dentist, call our office today to schedule an appointment.

Procedure for Root Canals

A typical root canal procedure takes about one to two hours. Here’s what you can expect to happen during the procedure:

1. Your dentist will numb the tooth so you don’t feel any pain during treatment.
2. To isolate the tooth and keep the area dry, a protective sheet is placed.
3. An opening in the tooth is made to access the pulp chamber and interior of the tooth.
4. Infected and damaged pulp is removed, and the dentist uses small tools to clean and shape the interior of the tooth.
5. The tooth is flushed out with an antibacterial solution to disinfect the tooth and remove any debris.
6. A rubber material called gutta-percha is used to fill the interior of the tooth.
7. To complete the restoration, a crown is placed on the tooth to strengthen and restore function.

Average Cost for Root Canals

The average cost of a root canal depends on which tooth is affected, the severity of damage to the tooth, the number of roots in the affected tooth, and whether you need to consult with a general dentist or endodontist. Your dental insurance may cover a portion of your total treatment costs. When you come into our clinic for your initial evaluation, our dentists can give you an estimate for what you can expect to pay for treatment. Call us today for more information and to make an appointment.

What Are the Different Types of Root Canals?

Most dentists and endodontists typically perform a root canal crown, but other treatment options are available. One option is a pediatric pulpotomy, which only removes the damaged pulp, leaving the tooth’s nerve intact. Another option is an apicoectomy in which the top part of the root is removed.

Are Root Canals Painful?

Root canal therapy has earned a misleading reputation of being extremely painful. In reality, it is not a painful procedure, and it can actually provide immediate relief from your pain and discomfort. Local anesthesia is administered to the area near the tooth, so you can expect to feel comfortable during your procedure. If you’re ready to take the next step to relieve your mouth pain, contact us today to get a root canal in Ludlow. Call us today at (413) 241-8991 or book an appointment online.
