You’re never fully dressed without a smile, Broadway used to sing. But a smile that’s discolored, yellow, or dingy leaves you feeling more exposed than you’d like. No wonder that people who spoke to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry said that whiter teeth topped their wish list of what they’d like to fix about their smiles.
With the innovative and convenient treatments that our office in Greenfield offers, you can restore the brightness of your smile without a lot of time or hassle. You can relax in our office and leave with whiter teeth in less than an hour, or take home a professional-strength, easy-to-use kit that can make your teeth an average of five shades whiter in just minutes a day.
Why Whiten Your Teeth?
Our tooth color comes from light reflecting off our enamel (the tooth’s hard outer layer) and the dentin (the soft inner layer visible underneath). Although brushing and flossing guard against tooth decay, teeth still can become dull and stained over time for the following reasons:
- Aging: As we grow older, our tooth enamel thins and the dentin darkens, becoming more noticeable.
- Foods and beverages: Those with intense color pigments (coffee, tea, red wine, cola) leave a buildup of stains on our teeth.
- Tobacco products: The tar and nicotine in these products discolor teeth.
- Medical treatments and medications: Chemotherapy, radiation, high blood pressure medicine, some antibiotics, antipsychotics, and antihistamines can darken teeth.
- Tooth decay or trauma: Our body’s natural reaction to an injured tooth is to have it produce more dentin, which can show through the enamel.
Tooth whitening is also an excellent preparation for restorative dental work. Dentures, bridges, veneers, and crowns don’t respond to whitening treatments because they’re stain-resistant. However, if you whiten your teeth before obtaining these, your dentist can color match them to your new whiter smile, so they’ll blend in seamlessly.
GLO® Science Professional: Dramatic Results with No Sensitivity
Our office in Greenfield proudly carries GLO Science Professional, a revolutionary whitening system that works in as little as 32 minutes. Its key is a patented closed mouthpiece that activates and accelerates treatment through gentle heat and light without causing troublesome sensitivity afterward.
GLO Science Professional has two strengths of hydrogen peroxide whitening gel (24 percent and 30 percent), which works in tandem with the specialized mouthpiece. We’ll help you choose the proper strength based on your current tooth sensitivity, shade, and desired results. The mouthpiece’s design keeps whitening oxygens from escaping, giving you teeth that are an average of five shades whiter in a shorter amount of time.
GLO®: Whiten Teeth at Home or On the Go
Our office in Greenfield also provides our patients with the innovative GLO teeth whitening system, which is similar to our in-office treatment but easy and convenient enough to perform at home.
Each GLO kit includes a protective lip balm to apply before treatment, premixed vials of 9 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, a patented mouthpiece similar to the one used in our office, a remote control to activate the mouthpiece’s gentle heat and light, and a lanyard, so you can attach the remote control and move freely during treatment.
GLO reduces the risk of sensitivity at home by bleaching your teeth in short bursts. You’ll apply a pea-size amount of gel to your teeth, then insert and activate the mouthpiece for eight minutes. Rinse off the gel and reapply for another eight minutes. Your daily treatment involves four treatments of eight minutes each. After five days, users noticed their teeth were an average of five shades brighter. You can use the kit safely for ten days to achieve the results you desire.
