Teeth-Whitening Swabs: An Effective Solution?
The increased popularity of teeth whitening has led to an increase in the number of home remedies and over-the-counter products available for purchase. One of the more recent such products are teeth whitening swabs, small sticks that look like Q-tips and are supposed to noticeably whiten your teeth within a single week. So how well do they actually work?
While we have not personally tested the effectiveness of teeth whitening strips, it’s usually the case that most over-the-counter whitening products are going to be less powerful than the stuff you can get from the dentist’s office.
Whitening products from your dentist are generally more effective because:
- You have a professional dentist applying them
- They have a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide
- Treatments like tooth trays can be customized to fit your teeth
- Dentists have tested their products and know how to optimize their use
Unfortunately, product reviews of most whitening swab products are decidedly mixed. While some customers report excellent results, 88 of the 108 Amazon reviews of Power Swabs are critical of the product, claiming little to no effect. And when the Wall Street Journal tested five different whitening products, whitening swabs were the only one that produced no noticeable results.
