InvisalignInvisalign is a dental alignment method that is quickly replacing traditional braces and retainers for many orthodontic patients. In addition to being a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth, it has several advantages over braces and retainers and has proven to be more comfortable.

Invisalign is actually a series of devices designed with 3-D computer imaging to plan your treatment from beginning to the end. These custom-made, see-through aligners are used to move teeth from their initial position in the mouth to the desired location, millimeters at a time. One aligner is used for about two weeks, and then the next one in the series is put in place, and then the next until the final alignment is achieved.

What Conditions Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign is ideal for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Overcrowding
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor overbite, underbite, or crossbite

What are the Advantages of Invisalign?

There are many advantages to Invisalign over traditional metal braces and retainers.

  • Whereas braces are cemented to your teeth, Invisalign devices are made of smooth plastic that will settle easily on your teeth.
  • Traditional braces move teeth by millimeters with wires. On the other hand, each Invisalign device is designed to accomplish the same goal without wires.
  • Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing you to easily eat, brush, and floss. However, they must be worn as much as possible and as prescribed by your dentist to achieve optimum results in the planned amount of time.

How Often Must Invisalign Aligners Be Worn?

Invisalign only works when you wear the aligners. For the treatment to proceed according to schedule, you will need to wear each aligner at least 22 hours daily. The only times you should take them out are before you eat, brush and floss your teeth.

Does Invisalign Really Work?

There are thousands of Invisalign users who would answer with a resounding, ‘Yes’. However, you need to abide by your dentist’s instructions for the treatment to succeed.. If the aligners are not worn properly, treatment may take longer than expected.

How Long Does Invisalign Take To Work?

Traditional orthodontic treatment can take up to two years, sometimes longer. With the Invisalign method, many treatments are completed in about 12 to 18 months.

Your dentist can show you on a monitor just how your teeth will be moved at each stage of the treatment and give you a timetable for the entire process. Before your Invisalign aligners are even ordered, your dentist can show you what your teeth will look like after the process is completed. Once you leave the office with your new aligners, your dentist will schedule regular visits to monitor the progress of the treatment.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners cannot be used to correct major dental misalignment or jaw alignment issues. Some crossbites or teeth that are tilted too badly may still require traditional orthodontic braces.

How Do I Take Care of my Aligners?

Avoid smoking during Invisalign treatment as the nicotine will stain the aligners. You should also avoid chewing gum while wearing the aligners because the gum will stick to them.

When you take out your aligners to eat, make sure to brush and floss before you put your Invisalign aligners back in after each meal. In addition to ensuring that your custom-fit device fits properly around your teeth, doing so will prevent food from getting trapped between your teeth or along your gum line. Moreover, if the food is not removed before inserting the aligners, it can become stationary and cause plaque over time. The aligners will also prevent saliva from fighting the bacteria in your mouth, so it is best to keep your teeth clean after eating.
